Sunday, July 19, 2015 - Dessau, Germany

I have arrived wet and muddy. I have good internet so I will get caught up with pictures and stories. As I mentioned yesterday my plan was to ride as far as I could before the rains came.

I left Wittenberg by the Schlosskirche and snapped a couple of pictures of the door. Of course the town has changed it since Martin Luther posted his notes for the Pope on it. In reality, it was a very big moment in history. I do not mean to make light of it.

I rode on for a while and the bike path was varied but usually very passable. On the left is the bike path through an industrial area. On the right it is in a rural area with a gate to keep cars off the path.

Along the way I had the chance to take a ferry across the river. It was controlled by rudders and the flow of the river. The ferryman only used the motor to get the platform on the landing area. The crossing was made using the river current. It costs 1.50 Euro.

I stopped at the one on the left and did not need to stop. I did not stop at the one on the right but probably needed to stop.

About 11:00, two hours early, the bottom fell out as they say. I got soaking wet. Very heavy rain at a time the trail was freshly graded dirt. This means mud by now. It totally filled my wheel well with mud. I found an interstate underpass for bicycles to stop and clean some off. I met this couple, Sarie and Kasper, from Holland. They offered me hot coffee from their thermos and offered them road advice about the mud and a way around it. We talked for about 30 minutes while the ran stopped. It was a wonderful experience and we of course exchanged addresses and emails. We will send each other the pictures we took of each other.

The road had many interesting features, see below and left and right.
I made it to my hotel and took a walking tour of the town. I then had an excellent meal at a Greek Restaurant. Lamb, potatoes and spinach. It was very good. I had three shots of Ouzo.

 The salad.
The spinach. The lamb. All was very good. I will sleep good tonight.

  1. We really loved all the new pics, especially of the biers. Of course, the sites and people were very interesting too. From all the new pics, it looks like you won't be starving any time soon. Great day. Is tomorrow your last day?
