August 5, 2022 -- Steinau an der Straße

Well, it has been an eventful learning day as the first real day on the road. It started much cooler than yesterday as we had a rain that dropped the temperatures about 20 plus degrees. Today's high has been 77 as compared to 100 the last two days. I rode a while this morning and then got on the train.

As yesterday the pictures have no order. Please give me time and I will eventually solve the problem. For now I will address each picture as it is displayed. I hope to be able to sort them as they were taken. A view of the bike path near Steinau (Straße), taken later in the day. There were only a few tourist on the bike path today. You know them by their heavily laden bicycles. Yesterday I saw a lone rider on a recumbent bicycle with an American Flag on the end. I tried to stop him and talk but he was going fast in the other direction. He looked old like some war crazed Vietnam veteran.

The approach to Steinau (Straße). Note the half timber houses. There will be lots of these pictures for the next 12 days. This is an old town. Inhabited for about 1000 years with oldest building about 8oo years old.

The entrance path just past the entrance gates. They were closed so I did not have to pay to get that far. Actually the entire town seemed closed. I believe Covid has really hit tourism in Germany and all of Europe. I had a long conversation with my taxi cab driver about how Covid had cut his income. He was also just hitting uo for a larger tip.It worked.

An odd fountain I found on a not main street. It appears as if the farmer and his wife are headed to market with pigs and chickens.

The Steinau Castle. this version of it was built in the early 1700's. You can see in the grounds around it, remains of earlier versions I found it most interesting, as it does not really compare to old buildings in Troy.

The area by my hotel They are having a play enactment of some of the fairy tales on Sunday. I will be on the road by then but I know that they do this all up and down the Brothers Grimm FairyTale  Route.

My hotel for the evening. It is an old building. The floors are uneven, the room is not square, the wiring is old, the steps are steep, It has keyed locks, I love it.

My bicycle ready to laod on the train for the middle portion of today's ride. It went on the train very well. There was a slight problem as I got off of the train, my back rack and bags fell on to landing platform. Luckily no one was getting on or off but me, so I did not inconvenience anyone. It took about 25 minutes to repair and fix the issues that caused this. It was caused ben own in attention to detail in assembly. A three year layover from riding has caused me to relearn lessons I used to know. There were no problems on the last section of the ride.

Tomorrow I will move to the Fulda River and the ride starts going somewhat down hill.  Today was mostly up hill at a not so difficult pace, especially with a little help from my friends at the Deutsche Bahn.
