Sunday, May 4, 2014 - Saareguemines, France

Today was a long 65 km fairly easy ride. The first eight km were up and down hill on a country road will some very respectful traffic. The next 52 km were on the canal, level and brief downhills at the locks. it ended with the last three km uphill. How do I always pick hotels uphill away from the rivers. However hat means tomorrows ride will begin with a nice 3 km ride downhill. I am in a very small B&B. It is excellent. the largest room I have had on this trip.

The road downhill away from the Convent. I told you it was out in the country. Very quite and peaceful. Just what I needed.
My first sighting of the canal. I was glad to get there and out of the hills. The canal did not change much on this day, except at the end.

Some bicycle friends i met at the hotel during breakfast. They are from Köln,  and they were on a week-end ride.
In this area there were many lakes. I read that most were build by monks from nearby abbeys as fish farms in the period between 1200 and 1500 AD.
In this picture the canal goes on a bridge over a stream. That is very unique.

The next two pictures are added for Charles. This is a "blockhouse" on the Saar Canal. It is written on the plaque that it was a part go the "Maginot Line".
