Monday, May 5, 2014 - Mertig, Germany

It was a nice 67 km ride today. It started down hill and stayed level or down hill all day.
This house was on the road out of town. I thought it was pretty. I asked but it was not for sale. I did not really want to live in France anyway.

An interesting way to prune a tree. I have seen a lot of trees pruned to just the truck and some horizontal branches. There are the first I have seen were the horizontal branches have been allow to grow.

I took a side trip into Sarrlouis. I was advised by an elderly German couple to go there as there is a lot of history in the city. Indeed, I knew that the city had been built in 1680 by King Louis XIV and had played a role in a lot of European history. While there I picked up (at least a picture) of some roses for Beth.

A bicycle rack outside a bank in Saarlouis. I thought it was quite an artistic bike rack. Maybe Charles and can mass produce them and sell them to Troy University and Troy city for all of the bikes in use in Troy.

As the river has gotten larger the barges and boats have also gotten larger. This one must be at the limit of 110 meters long. At least I saw a sign about ten times saying that was the limit. I checked its speed using by GPS. Meaning I matched its speed and it was going about 12 km per hour.

Tonights hotel. It is old and does seem to be reentry renovated. However, it has the most electrical outlets of any hotel I have stayed it on this or other trips. Six. More outlets than I have devices.

The dining room of the hotel. I liked the old wood paneling.

The beer for the day. A Bitburger. You can but them in Alabama.

A walkway with trellises. Notice the heavy wire construction.

Todays snack. A Currywurst with Brot. It was cut up, put in a bowl, mustard added and then the tomato based sauce added to the bowl. it was very good.

My Salad for the evening meal, the dressing was very good. I do not know how it was prepared but it was light and very tasty.

The evening meal.  I was in the mood for a steak as I had not eaten much the last two nights.

Tomorrow I ride early to Trier, Germany. I understand there is a lot of Roman history there.

  1. We have learned a lot from your blog and photos, when you travel alone "the accommodations are first class and the meals are gourmet".
