May 3, 2011 - Ieper to Gent 70 km, 480 km total

Today was an achievement. It seemed like 700 km not 70 km. I had a 20kmh HEADWIND. Some of today was uphill. Combined with the wind it was a challenge to my legs. My legs know it. I am going to bed early and get some needed rest. The ride was otherwise great, beautiful country side, scenic small towns, friendly people and good directions. I did not get lost or miss a turn. No food report but the beer has been plentiful and excellent. The residents of Belgium know how to brew good beer. No BS lite beers here. Tomorrow the ride is back to my orginal hotel outside Brussels about 80 km. The waeather report is for reduced winds from 20kmh to about 8kmh. I will cross northern Brussels and go by the airport. On ThursdayI will ride some in the vicinity of my hotel with a light bike. Later Thursday I will take apart the bike for packing. The last two nights I have stayed in small family run Bed & Breakfast type inns. Both have been much better than comparable priced hotels. I hope to remember this lesson for future trips. I will put pictures with all this after I get home.

  2. Hey, Bob!

Whats with this headwind stuff? Since the wind will be dropping off will it be a tailwind? So I guess you're planning a picture viewing at the beach. Please count Lydia and me in. I've been sampling Belgium beer and doing virtual bike rides on the computer. I simulated a head wind and got worn out. So I can relate.

    War Eagle!
Jack (Lydia had nothing to do with this E-mail and has not seen:-). Still no tulips?
