September 18, 2025 - Bad Oeynhausen, Germany

Today has been a hard bicycle day. Google was wrong about mostly flat. Well it could just be that thingy about beauty being in the eye of the beholder. It definitely did not seem mostly flat to me.

I left Paderborn via the train. It was a short ride to Bielefeld. That left me with a 35 km ride to get to Bad Oeynhausen. I had been in Bay Oeynhausen 3 years ago on the Brothers Grimm ride. Only then I was going south to north and this time am going west to east. It was not the ride I thought it was going to be. The train ride was nice I almost had the car to myself. The train new and modern.

I quickly got into the country without any problems. The bike path started out flat, until.

I came to my second least favorite bike path road sign. Literally it means the bike path is in poor repair. Lots of potholes and wide cracks in the asphalt.  That lasted about 8km or five miles. I have to slow down to keep from having an accident.

I also passed a home some pretty hydrangeas in the yard. I could resist stopping to take a picture. I liked the colors.

As you can see the country side is now rolling low hills. It appears flat to goggle but to me as I have problems with go up hill. I encourage going downhill. The uphills cause me to get off and the bicycle up hill after I have ridden as far up hill as I can.  This of course takes more time. I got to Bad Oeynhausen later than I had wanted to arrive.

Bad Oeynhausen is a spa town. The Bad means bath. There are usually hot springs in or near the Bad towns. People go there to get a “cure”. There typically more medical facilities and personnel than other small towns. On the left is a Ronald McDonald house associated with the hot springs. The sign in indicated the architect who designed the facility. I thought he may have also worked for Burger King as I think I see a tilted silver crown in the center of the house.

The town  catered to older people whose bodies were in need of “a cure”. I saw lots of older and less younger than anywhere else. The hotel I was in had a record player I would guess in each room. They were also in the hallways. The younger generation has never seen a record player. Notice the albums on the wall.

My meal for the evening was a very good pizza. The only size they has was 28cm (11inches). I could not eat it all. After 2/3s I just ate the topping.

After eating I gave serious thought to my plans for the rest of my trip. I am not interesting in pushing more than riding.

Until tomorrow.

  1. I see at least there was a McDonalds on L777. Catch that beloved train and get out of the German mini Alps. Look forward to your next post. Judy and Adrian
